Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer were also considered for the captaincy, but the selectors decided to go with KL Rahul. Chetan Sharma, the chairman of the selection committee, also stated that Rahul is being groomed for the captaincy.

‘Yes, we are seeing KL Rahul right now,’ Chetan Sharma said. He is a three-format player with a lot of captaincy experience. At the same time, all of the selectors believe he has demonstrated his leadership ability. Because Rohit is unfit, we decided that KL would be the best candidate to lead the team. As a result, we have faith in Rahul and are preparing him.

During the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Rahul captained Punjab in 27 games. During this time, the team won 11 games and lost 14, with two games ending in a tie. Rahul’s captaincy may have failed to get his team to the playoffs, but his batting performance was outstanding.

KL Rahul won the Orange Cap in IPL 2020 after scoring 670 runs at an average of 55.83. He scored one century and five half-centuries during this time. Following that, in IPL 2021, KL Rahul scored 626 runs at an average of 62.60 in 13 matches, including six half-centuries. In the 14th season, he was third in the league in terms of runs scored. KL Rahul’s performance shows that the pressure of captaincy hasn’t affected his batting.
